You can start this class with only a pencil and some paper. You'll also likely want a printer if you'd like to print off the worksheets and work alongside me exactly. (Although, this is not essential.) Down the road, you may also want to add additional papers, pencil tools, erasers, and a few other tools we'll discuss in class. But none are required. Start with the drawing tools you have on hand.

Absolutely! In this course, we'll be using pencil tools because they are highly accessible. However, the ideas talked about in class will translate to any art medium—including Procreate, oil paint, pastel, charcoal, etc!

This course will focus on sketching accurately, with the main focuses being: Line work, shapes, forms, angles, drawing negative space, gesture drawing, and measuring techniques. This course is filled with golden nuggets, from how to hold your pencil to how to find rhythmic connections in subjects. This sketching class is a 25+ year brain dump, yet presented in an organized and concise way. This class is designed to help you navigate drawing from any photo reference with confidence. It is not a class about drawing out of your head or drawing from life, although many of the ideas can translate over.

This course, while a deep dive, does not include lessons on values, light and shade, rendering, or any in-depth perspective lessons. I would encourage you to seek out other learning opportunities if you would like to learn more about these topics. This class is also not about life drawing or imaginative drawing (out of your head.)

In this course, I will present the main topic. Then we will practice the ideas presented, getting hands-on, putting the ideas to the test. This is where the transformation in your art will happen—when you both learn & practice. In this course, we're working entirely from photo references of objects, animals, and people. For many of the practice lessons, we will be drawing directly on top of photos. This will develop your knowledge and understanding of subjects, since understanding is foundational to good drawing.

I totally understand this and find myself saying this too sometimes. One of the mindset shifts we need to make though is—we make time for the things we care about. And if you care about art, getting better, and making the art you always wanted to make, then you do have time. A lot can be done in even 5-10 minutes a day! I've included schedules for how to work through the course. It's not a large time investment, but you can work through the course in 1 day, 4 days, or 8 days, and I will share those sample schedules with you in class. :) I want you to reach your creative dreams. You can do it!

I would encourage you to take advantage of the budget-friendly plan where you can split the payment up into 3 months. One way to consider this though is, how can you make the money back? With the skills gained from this course, if you wish to, one day you can sell your art through commissions, prints, etc. So you can make the investment now and pay it off with the skills you take away from the course. You do not need to have been born with natural drawing abilities. You CAN acquire the skills needed to draw well. What is required is simply passion for art. In this course, I've intentionally left out some big topics that other classes often keep included — like lighting and shading, for instance, aren't covered in Sketching Essentials. I've found that although vital to learn, these big, shiny, exciting topics can often take away from artists learning the bare bones techniques necessary to master in order to make great drawings. If the drawing is in the wrong place, things look disjointed, and proportions are off, we shouldn't move into developing the piece further. This class is designed to combat this problem.
