USING DOLLS AS REFERENCE

FOR CHARACTER ILLUSTRATION

Have you ever struggled to draw characters? I know I have! It can be so difficult to draw characters from your imagination.

When I was first learning, I would just draw from my head, and the results would never be quite what I intended.

Once I realized the importance of using references, I discovered that ball jointed dolls work wonderfully for characters!

So when creating my first digital character drawing course, I set out to find a beautiful doll that I could photograph and share with my students!

I purchased the Mari doll from Iplehouse.com and I photographed her from different angles. I used lots of different lighting scenarios and an array of wigs, eyes, and outfits to create many looks.

I’ve found these images to be the perfect solution to help me draw a variety of female characters. I hope they’ll be helpful to you too!
